February 2026 Athlete Of The Month
Congratulations to our February Athlete Of The Month, Suzy Shafi! Suzy has really stepped things up lately and her consistency is paying off. Showing up early, training regularly, and putting in honest effort has led to noticeable progress across the board. She’s also a huge positive presence in class. Suzy brings great energy and is often the first person to encourage someone who’s on the fence about trying something new. That kind of support matters and makes the room better for everyone. Athlete of the Month is about consistency, effort, and being a good teammate. Suzy checks all three boxes. Congrats, Suzy. Well deserved.

Name: Suzy Shafi
Age: 31
Occupation: I’m a nurse practitioner at University of Maryland’s downtown campus + part time grad student pursuing a psychiatric and mental health board certification.
What brought you to Baltimore Built?
I was in a fitness RUT. I felt like though I had been doing crossfit for a while, I was no longer making progress. I tried training independently, swimming a few days a week, ClassPass etc but nothing quite fit the bill. I saw the progress people I knew were making at Built and decided to give these brothers a whirl!
How long have you been a member at Baltimore Built?
Just over a year!
Were you athletic or involved in sports when growing up? If so, what sports and or activities did you participate in?
Yes! I started swimming when I was a few years old and stuck with it competitively until college. When it wasn’t swim season I signed up for badminton, soccer and/or the track and field teams. We aren’t quite at the holiday 5k family status but I definitely was encouraged to stay active from a young age which I’m grateful for.
Why do you workout?
I’ve worked with chronically ill folks for most of my life and in thinking about preventing illness or staying independent, the benefits of strength training for longevity are pretty unparalleled, particularly in females. It’s a natural anti-depressant, an automatic community, and an opportunity to regularly surround yourself with people who share an intention of becoming a little better. Plus.. muscles!!!
What is your favorite lift or movement and why?
I’ve never met a snatch I didn’t love! It’s where strength, mobility, and intricacy meet. It’s reliable in that there’s ALWAYS something to work on and for that reason it’s very rewarding to see progress there.
What is your favorite workout or type of workout and why?
A long, sweaty chipper where we forget gymnastics exists and get cozy with some barbell cycling, burpees and the assault bike. Extra points if it’s with a partner and the class ends with all of us piled on the ground. It’s just evidence of a hard day's work which, to me, means extra treats later.
What have you accomplished as an athlete (big or small) during your time at Baltimore Built?
Hitting 24 classes in January was honestly huge for me! But to get here I had to admit that I needed help with accountability so I started personal training with Dom in November. He uses EVERY minute of the hour and truly delivered on the support I needed to establish a foundation and better health habits.
What fitness goals do you have for the next year?
My siblings and I signed up for an olympic triathlon at the end of April (I’ve wanted this one for a while!). Remain in the committed club year round. All things gymnastics and pull-up related. Maybe a competition at the end of the year!
How has your fitness influenced and/or impacted your life outside of the gym?
To me, showing up for fitness is one of the greatest forms of self-love because of how its positive ripple reaches life separate from the gym. It instills confidence and makes me a better learner, advocate, sister, friend, and partner 100% of the time!
What hobbies and activities do you enjoy outside of the gym?
I love trying new foods or cooking for people, saying yes to things I’ve never tried and spending time with my family, friends and my two gremlin kitties, Ivy + Fennel.
